Entertainers being sought for cruise ship Thursdays

The Cruise Task Force is starting the annual undertaking of finding entertainment to help keep cruise ship passengers interested in Prince Rupert during ship’s stop here.

This year, the group is trying to spice things up even more for the Norwegian Cruise Line’s last season stopping in Prince Rupert.  The Cruise Task Force is searching for around 40 entertainers for the season from an arrangement of different art forms to take part in auditions that will be held on April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Tom Rooney Playhouse.

“It would be awesome if we could get people who breath fire, juggle, or contort their bodies into boxes, but we know that’s pretty unrealistic. [We’re looking for] any singers, people reading poetry, actors, etc.,” commented Rudy Kelly, who is the Task Force’s street entertainment coordinator.

The Cruise Task Force is looking to fill various spots on the streets ranging from 3rd Avenue down to Cow Bay, and along 2nd Avenue in order to ensure passengers get to see all of Prince Rupert’s downtown. The group still hasn’t finalized where all of the spots will be located, as it depends a lot on how many entertainers will be taking part.

The Cruise Task Force is hoping to get a number of actors involved so monologues that tell stories of Prince Rupert’s history can be acted out in various locations.

“The reason that we’re really throwing entertainers out there this year is because of the Norwegian Cruise Line saying that they won’t be returning to Prince Rupert at the end of this season…We are hoping to really kick pick it up, and really draw people and get them more engaged and entertained,” explained Kelly.

Organizers are planning on having entertainers alternating each week, as it is difficult to get the same entertainers out there every week. This will give entertainers more freedom. As well, the Cruise Task Force is looking at possibly paying entertainers for their efforts this year in addition to any funds entertainers made busking.

People wishing to help ensure this year’s cruise season will be unforgettable can set up an audition with Rudy Kelly at 250-624-6707, or  email at rudy.kelly@princerupert.ca.
