Wantage Road got a much needed face-lift on March 18 as volunteers gathered for a garbage cleanup.
Approximately 10 people gathered at the Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery at noon, and began the walk, picking up bottles, bags, food containers and other larger items.

“We’ve collected tires, a couch, an oven door, bottles, scrap metal and food wrappers,” said Chantal Meggison, a coordinator with Positive Prince Rupert Civic Pride.
By the end of the cleanup, the group had collected several bags of garbage which were then loaded on to trucks for disposal and recycling.
Meggison said dumping on Wantage Road behind the golf course and further up the Mount Hays Trail has been an issue in Prince Rupert for years. Clean up crews consistently collect truckloads of garbage every year, in areas that could damage the area’s ecosystem.

“We have a lot of wildlife here like deer, birds, the fish in the creek and bears,” she said. “By removing this waste we’re making it safer for them.”
