Tough day at the tournament for Prince Rupert teams
Day five was a hard day for Prince Rupert teams at the 59th annual All Native Basketball Tournament, with only two of the city’s teams remaining in contention.
The women’s team played Kitamaat with an opportunity to make it to the finals on the winner’s side of the bracket with a victory. The Prince Rupert Rain kept the game close in the first quarter, only trailing 15-12 after one, but Kitamaat’s depth, experience and scoring ability began to show itself as the game progressed. Kitamaat extended their lead to 34-18 at the end of the first half, 52-27 at the end of the third quarter and cruised down the stretch to a comfortable 64-41 victory. The loss knocks the Rain into the loser’s side of the bracket. They next play Hazelton for a place in the finals.
The men’s senior team was eliminated from the tournament after losing to the defending champion Skidegate Saints. The Grizzlies, playing with their usual combination of grit, energy and determination, gave the Saints all they could handle in the first half, and took a 36-34 lead into the second half. However, the defending champions depth and size was too much for the Grizzlies to match, as the Saints were able to take control and pull away in the third and fourth quarters. The Saints would win the game 90-65, and will continue to fight their way through the loser’s side of the bracket for a spot in the finals.
