The Northern View editorial team has received three award nominations for digital excellence at this year’s British Columbia/Yukon Community Newspaper Association Ma Murray Awards.

This is the first year the Awards Gala has included five new digital award categories, and the View’s editor, Shannon Lough, has been nominated for three digital awards along with Keili Bartlett, Quinn Bender and Todd Hamilton.

Lough is up for the Breaking News Video Award for “A stand of defiance” a story about the totem pole raised on Lelu Island following the end of the Pacific NorthWest LNG project. She is up against the Vancouver Courier’s Mike Howell and Michael Kissinger and Lake Country Calendar’s Barry Gerding and Jen Zielinski.

She was also nominated for the Multimedia Series Award for her feature titled “Rebuilding the Tsimshian language” that explored how School District 52 teaches the Sm’algyax language and culture to all of its students, and how some teachers even offer lessons for adults. She is in the category with Vancouver Island Free Daily staff and Williams Lake Tribune’s Angie Mindus.

The View’s editorial team, including Lough, Bartlett, Bender and Hamilton, were nominated for Feature Video Award for coverage on Prince Rupert’s famous “Hammy the Deer”. They are in the category with Yukon News’ Crystal Schick and Vancouver Courier’s Dan Toulgoet, Michael Kissinger and John Kurucz.

This is Lough’s second nomination. In 2017, she received the John Collision Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism for her work on “The Last Post, the search for the man in the cardboard box — The Earl Corliss story.”

The Ma Murray Awards celebrate the work of community journalists across the province for photography, writing in print, storytelling for digital, advertising and overall newspaper excellence.

More than 20 Black Press newspapers are up for the awards this year. Winners will be announced on April 28 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.
