Update:
The Prince Rupert RCMP have confirmed the death of a 53-year-old Port Edward man after a crash near the Galloway Rapids Bridge.
The man died after crashing a blue Toyota Tacoma into the ocean just after 12 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the RCMP.
A subsequent rescue effort from the RCMP, Prince Rupert Fire and Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services was unsuccessful, according to Prince Rupert RCMP media relations officer Brody Hemrich.
The man’s body was found when the vehicle was retrieved from the water, according to the RCMP.
“We would like to thank our partners for their assistance in this file,” Hemrich said.
“We are working with the BC Coroner’s Service to determine exactly what happened in this tragic incident and we encourage anyone with information to come forward and speak with police.”

A vehicle crashed near the Galloway Rapids Bridge this afternoon, according to the Prince Rupert RCMP.
The status of the driver is currently unknown, though the RCMP has confirmed the vehicle submerged underwater in the afternoon of April 23.
“The RCMP received a report of a vehicle going into the water near the Galloway Rapids Bridge,” said Prince Rupert RCMP media relations officer Brody Hemrich.
“We are working with internal and external partners to piece together what happened, and to locate the vehicle that is completely submerged. We will update the public as the investigation progresses.”
