Remuneration, expenses of Gitga'at leadership released

Along with Old Massett Village Council, remuneration for leaders of the Gitga'at Nation of Hartley Bay have been released.

Along with Old Massett Village Council, remuneration for leaders of the Gitga'at Nation of Hartley Bay have been released through the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.

The report, which was prepared on July 29, shows Gitga'at Chief Councillor Arnold Clifton received $43,200 in honoraria during the past year, which was coupled with $14,484 in expenses.

All four councillors received $18,000 in honoraria, but expenses varied greatly. Coun. Kyle Clifton claimed expenses of $6,803 and Coun. Marven Robinson claimed expenses of $9,671, while Coun. Cameron Hill claimed expenses of $16,260 and Coun. Bruce Reece topped all council expenses with $30,252 claimed.

As of Thursday morning, reports had yet to be posted from the Lax Kw'alaams Band, Metlakatla Band, Gitxaala Band and Skidegate Band, On Aug. 6, the federal government has warned First Nations throughout the country that failure to report financial statements within 120 days could risk losing government funding.
