The Port of Prince Rupert has selected a new member for its board of directors. Beverley Clifton Percival was recommended by the Minister of Transport and appointed to the position by Canada’s Privy Council for her background in First Nations treaty negotiation in northwest B.C.

“The safe and responsible development of industry in northern British Columbia is something that I have been actively engaged in for the last decade. I am excited to bring my personal and professional experience to the board of the Prince Rupert Port Authority and help guide the growth and development of the Port of Prince Rupert in years to come,” Clifton Percival said in a press release.

She is a member of the Gitxsan Nation and her most recent roles include serving as health director for the Witset First Nation, negotiating with the Gitxsan Treaty Society by representing hereditary chiefs to aid legal protection of rights and title. Clifton Percival formerly worked as a program coordinator and instructor at the Northwest Community College.

“Her experience in progressive roles with Indigenous organizations in our region will be an invaluable addition to our governance team as the port continues to realize its vision for strategic growth and diversification,” Bud Smith, chairman of the board of the Prince Rupert Port Authority, said in a press release.

She joins the board of directors for a three-year term after the passing of Elmer Derrick in late 2017. Derrick had served on the board since 2012.
