DFO launches investigation into alleged salmon deaths

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada has confirmed they have launched an investigation into allegations of salmon death during the construction of the Fairview Container Terminal expansion.

“There is very little we can say without compromising the active investigation. We are currently quantifying the impacts of what occurred during the expansion and the death of various species of fish. Those findings will dictate how we proceed,” said Leri Davies, the strategic media relations advisor for DFO in an email.

Port of Prince Rupert manager of corporate communications Michael Gurney said they are aware of the investigation concerning the situation at the Fairview Expansion site and they’re cooperating to determine the facts relevant to the incident.

“We take this very seriously and we’ve been engaged with DFO as well as the proponent DP World that is undertaking the expansion and their contractor, Fraser River Pile and Dredge and BEL Construction,” Gurney said.

“We’re continuing to work with DFO to ascertain the extent and the nature of the incident,” he said.
