Those who rely on public transit will need to prepare for schedule changes as the holiday season nears.

Leading into the holidays, BC Transit is extending its hours to 10 p.m. on Dec. 20, 21 and 23 to accommodate late night shopping. The extended hours apply to routes 51, 52, 53 and 54.

For the Christmas holidays, regular bus service on Christmas Eve will end at 6:45 p.m. and all bus service is cancelled for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Regular service will resume on Dec. 27 and BC Transit will be offering free service on New Year's Eve from 6:45 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. With support from the District of Port Edward, BC Transit will be offering free rides between Prince Rupert and Port Edward on New Year's Eve, with buses leaving from Prince Rupert at 6:10 p.m., 7:10 p.m., 9:30 p.m., 10:10 p.m. and every hour on the hour between one a.m. and three a.m.

There will be no bus service offered on New Year's Day and regular scheduled service will resume on Jan. 2
