UPDATE: RCMP recover bodies of missing Skeena River boaters

UPDATE:

Following the second day of rescue efforts, the bodies of all three missing Terrace boaters have been recovered from the Skeena River.

The bodies of the remaining male and female boaters were recovered today, following the discovery of the first male yesterday.

"It is with great sadness that we have to inform the public of this incident," said Const. Matt Ericson, spokesman for the Prince Rupert RCMP detachment.

"Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic event."

Terrace Search and Rescue, RCMP West Coast Marine Services, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue-Station 64, and the Canadian Coast Guard re-attended the scene this morning and began searching for the missing boaters by land and air, following yesterday's search which was called off because of extreme weather conditions.

At this point, all of the individuals have been identified and are from the Terrace area.

The search is now over, with the investigation being handed over to the British Columbia Coroner's Service. Investigators are confident this matter is not suspicious in nature.

UPDATE:

Prince Rupert RCMP have recovered the body of one male from the Skeena River. However, the whereabouts of the other male and female remain unknown.

The search was called off shortly after 4:30 p.m. due to weather conditions, but will resume at first light tomorrow.

ORIGINAL:

Search efforts are underway for three missing boaters from Terrace.

Two men and one woman have been reported missing on the Skeena River about 33 kilometres east of Prince Rupert. The trio were set to return home in the afternoon of Nov. 11 after visiting Frizzell Hot Springs.

Terrace Search and Rescue have sent out personnel in two boats to the area, along with another boat carrying Prince Rupert RCMP officers.

Terrace Search and Rescue's Dave Jephson said the search is ongoing.

"My understanding is conditions are starting to change and starting to be a risk for our members to be on the water. We're working with the RCMP out of Prince Rupert to determine the best line of action to try to rule out the whereabouts of the three individuals," Jephson said.

The missing boaters' vehicles were located on Tuesday morning by RCMP plane.
