UPDATE: Container ship run aground in Prince Rupert now at Fairview Terminal
A vessel destined for Prince Rupert’s Fairview Terminal ran aground late last night just outside of Prince Rupert Harbour on Nov. 20.
The 278 metre Hanjin Geneva became lodged on a sand bar past Ridley Island after it had to move to avoid a fishing vessel.
“An on-board assessment was done at that point and no damage was reported. This morning when the Port Authority vessel arrived an assessment of the exterior of the ship also showed no damage,” said Prince Rupert Port Authority Manager of Corporate Communications Michael Gurney.
“Once it is berthed a Fairview Terminal a more thorough assessment of the ship will be done, but right now all indications are that there was no damage and no injuries.”
Shortly before 7:30 a.m. the ship moved under its own power into deep water where it was aided by tugs in berthing at Fairview Terminal. Unloading and loading of the ship was delayed until the ship’s master has determined that the vessel is safe and secure.
The Transportation Safety Board sent a crew to Prince Rupert to investigate the accident
