Prince Rupert will be losing one of its retail businesses early next year.

Athletes World, located in the upper floor of the Rupert Square Mall, is going out of business as its parent company restructures its operations.

"The store will be closing on Jan. 27, 2013. Athletes World is being phased out by March because we are putting more focus on our core brands, Sport Chek and Atmosphere," said FGL Sports Ltd. public relations specialist Brandon Arnold.

And while Athlete's World is closing down, Arnold said the company may not necessarily be done with Prince Rupert.

"We are looking at a number of different leases to see if there is a Sport Chek or Atmosphere near by. If there isn't then there is some studying to be done to see if it is a possible location," he said.

When Athletes World closes, it will join Fields, Zellers and Salty Crab as stores that have closed in the Rupert Square Mall in the past year. However, during that same time, Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, Dollarama and Express News have opened in the mall.
