Angela Sterritt, an award-winning investigative journalist and national bestselling author of “Unbroken,” will join the Vancouver Island Regional Library for a virtual talk on the poignant issues faced by Indigenous women and girls.

Sterritt’s book, which is part memoir and part investigation into the murders and disappearances of Indigenous women and girls, became an instant national bestseller and is nominated for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Award for best non-fiction book in Canada.

“Having Angela with us just days ahead of Red Dress Day on May 5 is a powerful tribute to the many Indigenous women and girls who have been victims of a system that has failed them,” says VIRL librarian Dalia Levy. “It is important for everyone to hear Angela’s personal stories and the stories she has reported on.”

Sterritt is from the Wilp Wiik’aax of the Gitanmaax community within the Gitxsan Nation on her father’s side and from Bell Island, Newfoundland, on her mother’s side. She worked as a television, radio, and digital journalist at CBC for more than a decade, hosted the award-winning CBC original podcast “Land Back,” and lives on the territories of the Skwxwu7mesh, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh in Vancouver.

Participants attending the virtual talk, scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., are advised to prepare for a session that will address trauma, systemic racism, and potentially triggering themes. The Indigenous Crisis Line will be available 24/7 toll-free at 1-800-588-8717 across B.C. to provide support for those affected.

This event is free. RSVP at virl.bc.ca/event/angela-sterritt to receive the Zoom link prior to the event.

If you cannot attend the live event on April 30, a recording will be available in early May 2024.
